Variety Descriptions

Branson

BRANSON is a soft red winter wheat bred and developed by AgriPro Wheat. Branson is a medium height semi-dwarf variety with good straw strength. Branson is moderately resistant to Septoria Leaf Blotch, Stripe rust, and Powdery Mildew. It has intermediate resistance to Soilborne Mosaic virus and Leaf rust. Primary adaptation is the wheat growing regions of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Branson has been uniform and stable since 2003. Less than 0.8% of the plants were rogued from the Breeders Seed increase in 2004. Approximately 90% of the rogued variant plants were taller height wheat plants (8 to 15 cm) and 10% were awned plants. AgriPro Wheat maintains seed stock and certified classes of Foundation, Registered and Certified.Certified seed stocks of Branson will be available in the fall of 2005.

GP 348

GP 348 was released by GROW PRO GENETICS. (var. B16#04-8348) It is an early maturing, medium height, awnless soft red winter wheat. GP 348 has good resistance to powdery mildew and Septoria. It is very susceptible to soil borne mosaic virus, and moderately susceptible to Fusarium head blight and barley yellow dwarf virus. It has a great test weight and high falling number. GP 463

GP 463 is a certified soft red winter wheat variety released by GROW PRO GENETICS. The variety is described as having a smooth head type, medium early heading date, 34” plant height, and acceptable disease ratings with dependable Fusarium tolerance. This variety was accepted for certification by the Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies (AOSCA) in 2021. GP 463 was selected for high-yield, test weight and height. This new variety was developed by use of a doubled haploid breeding program. The variety is adapted to the Midwestern states and eastward to Pennsylvania and tidewater area of Virginia. GP 463 exhibits above average resistance to Fusarium head blight and leaf rust. It is susceptible to stripe rust and powdery mildew. Up to 1% variant plants may be encountered in subsequent generations. These may include tall (>3 inches) or awned plants. The variety is a three-generation kind with Foundation, Registered, and Certified seed classes maintained by Grow Pro Genetics. A patent for the variety is anticipated in year 2022. GP 747

GP 747 is a certified soft red winter wheat variety released by GROW PRO GENETICS. This variety was accepted for certification by the Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies (AOSCA) in 2021. Kokosing

Kokosing (OH-08-206-69) is a 2016 Certified variety Ohio State University release. This is a non-protected variety whose yield performance on the average is 13 bu./acre higher than “Malabar” and “Bromfield”, three days earlier in maturity, and two to three inches shorter in height than both of the previously mentioned varieties. In addition, this variety has excellent foliar ratings as regards foliage health and good FHB resistance, strong straw strength and below average test weight. It is resistant to Powdery Mildew and Staganospora leaf blotch and moderately resistant to Stripe Rust. This variety has tan colored chaff and is apically awnletted. Kokosing is a three generation (F, R, &C) Certified variety with a royalty of $.01/lb. for Registered and Certified seed classes sold. Seed stock will be maintained by Ohio Foundation Seeds, Inc.

Malabar

MALABAR (OH02-7217) is a soft red winter wheat variety developed by the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center and released to the Ohio Foundation Seeds organization for increase in the fall of 2007. This variety was released due to its adaptation to Ohio, outstanding tolerance to Fusarium Head Blight, and excellent resistance to lodging.In 23 trials Malabar yielded 3.8 bu./acre more than “Hopewell” and its test weight was 0.5 lbs./bu. greater. This new variety was 2nd in yield performance out of 25 entries tested in the 2007 Five State Yield Trial. Malabar is 1 to 2 inches taller than Hopewell and heads out about the same time. Malabar has tan chaff, is awnless, and has moderate resistance to Powdery Mildew and Stagonospora Leaf and Glume Botches. Malabar has an exceptional Fusarium Head Blight Index that is similar to that of the resistant check, Truman.

Sunburst

SUNBURST is a proprietary Certified soft red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) developed by the Sunbeam Extract Company of Wooster, Ohio and is exclusively assigned to Central Ohio Seed Testing in 2008. Sunburst is widely adapted to the Eastern Corn Belt, more specifically to Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and parts of Canada. Sunburst is intended for general-purpose wheat market. Sunburst has blue-green head color, an erect-twisted flag leaf, short height, excellent straw strength, and is awnless. Green stage variants include: a combined total of 0.6% tall, awned, and or yellow-green heads. Sunburst was selected due to its excellent winter hardiness, excellent test weight, high yield potential, good scab resistance, and leaf stripe rust resistance.

SY 007

SY 007 is a soft red winter common wheat bred and developed by Syngenta Seeds Inc. SY 007 was selected for average height, earlier than average maurity, above average appearance and average kernel soundness using a modified bulk breeding method. SY 007 has shown a medium early maturity, good test weight, and is medium in height. It has shown best adaptation to the primary wheat growing regions of southern IL, IN, KY, MO and Southern OH and the Del-Mar-VA region of the east coast. It is primarily adapted to a double crop rotation. SY 007 however may also perform well in areas north of I-70 where earlier varieties are sought. SY 007 shows above average stripe rust and powdery mildew resistance, moderate resistance to septoria and soil bourne mosaic virus. It shows moderate susceptibility to fusarium head blight and susceptibility to the races of leaf rust present in the primary area of adaptation. Syngenta Seeds Inc. maintains seed stock and Certified classes of Foundation, Registered and Certified. Syngenta Seeds Inc. will maintain the variety by the head row method to produce breeder seed if needed. SY 100

SY 100 is a soft red winter common wheat bred and developed by Syngenta Seeds. SY 100 was selected for average height, average maturity, above average appearance and average kernel soundness produced as an F1 derived double haploid. SY 100 is well-adapted as to be a high yielding winter wheat in the Midwestern soft red wheat growing regions north of I-70 and in the Mid-Atlantic based on tests throughout the soft red wheat growing regions in the Eastern US. SY 100 has tested moderately resistant to stripe rust, powdery mildew, and barley yellow dwarf virus. It has tested moderately susceptible to FHB, soil-borne mosaic virus, and Septoria. It is susceptible to leaf rust. Identifying characteristics include blue green leaf color at boot stage; recurved, twisted and waxy flag leaf at boot stage; white auricle color; yellow anther color; with apically awnletted awn type. Syngenta Seeds, Inc. maintains seed stock and certified classes of Foundation, Registered and Certified. Syngenta Seeds, Inc. will maintain the variety by the head row method to produce breeder seed as needed. Royalty fees are anticipated. SY 547

SY 547 is a soft red winter wheat bred and developed by Syngenta Seeds,Inc. and released in 2014. SY 547 was selected for average height,earlier than average maturity, above average appearance and average kernel soundness. This variety has shown a medium maturity, above average test weight, and is medium in height. SY 547 has also shown in a wide adaptation with above average check performance in the Great Lakes Region, Midwest, Mid-South, North east and Mid-Atlantic. The highest yield advantage has been in the double crop region of Southern IL. SY 547 has tested above average resistance to powdery mildew, soilborne mosaic virus and Septoria nodorum. It has tested average tolerance to current races of stripe & leaf rust and Fusarium head blight. It is known to be moderately susceptible to barley yellow dwarf virus. Breeder seed increases were rogued, however up to 1.0% variant plants may been countered in subsequent generations. Syngenta Seeds, Inc. maintains seed stock and Certified classes of Foundation,Registered and Certified seed. Certified seed will be available in 2015. maturity, appearance, and disease resistance. SY 576 is primarily
adapted to the northern Indiana, southern Michigan, and western
Ohio in the Upper Midwest, and the Mid-Atlantic region. SY 576
has shown high levels of resistance to both leaf and strip rust, while also exhibiting moderate resistance to fusarium head blight. It is moderately susceptible to both soil borne mosaic virus and powdery mildew. Identifying characteristics include an awned head type.
